In some places, dogs are raised for their meat, causing friction with people who keep dogs as pets. In times of great stress, such as when the Vikings of Greenland starved to death at the start of the Little Ice Age (14th century - 19th century), humans have been known to eat their pets.

In some small Chinese provincial towns, there is a special breed of dog (called "Black Dogs" in Chinese language) mainly used for cuisine. However, dog meat is banned in several major cities such as Hong Kong, Peking and Shanghai and sale may lead to prosecution. Although dog meat is still served in some restaurants, Chinese people generally regard it as a rather "low status" food.

The people of South Korea have been known to eat dogs as well. This led to issues during the 2002 Football World Cup when Korea was hosting the game with the local government keen to obscure this practice from visiting countries.
